This poem is based off the book I Am David (A WWII story) Approached by misfortune. The grey walls so high. The wire so sharp. The guns aimed nigh Though friends for only days, the compassionate dog knew David was in danger. He whined. Saying; Let us go, Away from this perilous place. David prayed for protection over the dog’s life, for David knew his own would soon be over. David peered through the sprouting green bush, His eyes met sight of the guards. Another restless whine from the fearless dog. Another prayer for protection, Acceptance of the courage to die. The wise dog would teach the boy through his own actions. Teaching him there is no greater love that one can show, Than to lay down one’s life for one’s friend. A nudge from the courageous dog, Then only the breeze of his spirit remained with the boy. The devoted dog gave the ultimate sacrifice. The loving dog cried his last to the boy: Run, run from the guns. Flee, flee from the imprisonment. Out, out from behind the bush. Run, run for your life. For your life is worth much more than mine, And my time has come to deliver you from the shackles of the camp, from the trammel of the camp, from the greyness of the camp. And the time has come for your freedom to be secured. Run, sweet child, do not let your hardened eyes stop you. Do not let me get in your way, for I freely give my life to save yours, do not let anyone be in your way, for you are David. Oh, run sweet child, Run sweet David.
